WHO, UNAIDS and the UNAIDS Reference Group on Estimates, Modelling and Projections held a consultation to review and discuss estimates of child infections and need for ART. This meeting sought to review and discuss the methods used to generate estimates and projections of paediatric HIV and related indicators and new data available to further inform these methods. The meeting focussed on the following areas in specific relation to paediatric HIV:
- HIV prevalence
- The interaction of fertility and HIV
- Mother-to-child transmission
- Mortality on treatment
- Disease progression, retention in care
- Forecasting treatment needs
- Adolescents
Consensus recommendations were produced to improve the methods used to generate estimates of paediatric HIV and related indicators, and research required to support further development.
